Tanzania, Wednesday 18, 2015: Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited has launched a football tournament dubbed 'Standard Chartered Trophy: Road to Anfield 2015'. According to a press release issued by the Bank, the ‘Standard Chartered Trophy – Road to Anfield’ is an international 5-a-side football tournament organized by the Bank in partnership with Liverpool FC that offers football fans a once in a life time ‘Money Can’t Buy’ opportunity of playing on an English Premier League football pitch.

Whilst this will be the first time Tanzania is participating, the tournament has been running in various Standard Chartered markets for a couple of years dating back to when the Bank took over the sponsorship of Liverpool Football Club in 2010. In May 2014 the tournament was awarded ‘Best International Marketing Campaign’ by BT Sports Industry Awards – considered to be a pinnacle award within the sports marketing industry.

The tournament comprises three phases; the national qualifiers to take place in each participating country, the regional tournament to take place in the ten participating regions; East Africa – Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda; Southern Africa – Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe; West Africa – Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria; South Asia - India, Sri Lanka; SEAN - Vietnam, Singerpore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei; Greater China – Hong Kong; and Northeast Asia – Korea, and the ‘Finals’ tournament at the Liverpool FC home grounds, Anfield.

The Tanzania qualifying legs will take place on 28th February 2015, where a total of 32 teams, comprising of clients, corporate bodies, and the media, will battle it out at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Grounds in a one day five-a-side football competition to qualify for the regional tournament.

A regional tournament with the winning teams from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda will be held in Nairobi on March 7, with the winner representing East Africa at Anfield, the home ground of Liverpool FC, where a total of 10 teams from across Standard Chartered's global footprints will compete for the ultimate trophy on the 7 & 8th May 2015. The winners of the ‘Finals’ will be crowned Overall Champions of ‘Standard Chartered Trophy 2015’.

Announcing the prizes, Liz Lloyd, Standard Chartered Bank’s Chief Executive Officer in Tanzania said: “The ultimate prize is the ‘Money Can’t Buy’ experience of playing on English Premier League football pitch belonging to one of the most successful clubs in the history of English football. And in addition to the all expenses paid for return trips to Nairobi and the UK for the regional tournament and the ‘Finals’ respectively, the teams will be treated to a 3-day itinerary in the UK, which includes a training session at the Academy by LFC legends.”

On who is qualified to take part in the competition, Liz explained that the tournament is open to an invited group of clients, corporate bodies, staff and members of media. Registration will be on first come first serve basis after invitations are sent out and will close on the Monday, 23rd February 2015.

“We want to give our customers, staff, and you members of media this exceptional experience, but the honors are really on you. You need to play well here to qualify and go on to beat Uganda and Kenya in Nairobi before you can enjoy this ultimate experience of playing at Anfiled and get the chance to rub shoulders with the alltime LFC legends – the likes of John Barnes and others. We want a Tanzanian team to go all the way and be crowned the Overall Champions of ‘Standard Chartered Trophy 2015’, so the challenge is on you!” Liz concluded.

On his part, Charles Katongole, the Bank’s Head of Financial Markets, who is also a Top Management Sponsor of the event in Tanzania, said “Tanzania is passionate about football and the English Premier League in particular. As a bank that is deeply committed to our clients we are proud to be able to leverage our relationship with Liverpool as their official sponsor to give Tanzanian football fans this once in a lifetime opportunity to play on the hallowed turf of Anfied. It is for us a great way to engage football fans, reward and motivate fans, clients and employees, further grow the support for Liverpool, and have a fun-filled interactive sporty and memorable event.”
